Door County Weekend

I’m sure you’ve heard about Door County, Wisconsin, about how beautiful it is, how Chicagoan’s have homes there and probably even about the cherries. Although I’ve always lived close, I’ve never made the trip. {FYI, Door County is the county, not a town.} The county is a peninsula with 300 miles of coastline, which makes for  beautiful scenery, perfect weather for orchards, lots of boats, 11 lighthouses and plenty of relaxing.

KN and I have been trying to get up there for a couple of years! Since his sister has a second home there, she is always telling us that we need to “come visit Door County”. While we were there we met up with them for dinner in Sturgeon Bay at a good old fashioned supper club. At first, I was wondering what the deal was since the place looked to have original decor, all the windows covered and a gigantic bar with the big padded bar stools. Of course, after being updated on the history, it immediately became more charming. Furthermore, the food was great! I just didn’t know in advance that I was supposed to order a brandy old fashioned or finish off my meal with a grasshopper (and I love those!).

If Door County is on your to do list,  fall is one of the most popular times to head there. It’s all about the colors. We were a bit too early for that and for everything pumpkin. If you were thinking of going, now is a great time! The best part is that it is a short 4 hour road trip.

My recommendations for Door County:

Find a unique place to stay.

We stayed at Blacksmith Inn On the Shore. This place is a historic B&B type of place in a quiet little town. Since we never stay at little romantic Inns like this, it was fun to do something different. However, there are all types of places on the water. The idea is to hang out, rest and relax. We did not, as a result, we drove around like crazy because I wanted to see all of the little towns.

Plan a route.

Yes, I said we drove around like crazy. We really didn’t plan a route so that’s why I am recommending that you make one. Even though nothing is far, it’s only ten miles or less across and 75 miles long, it’s good to have a plan. Start with where you are staying and plan around that.  Sturgeon Bay is the biggest town and is at the base of the peninsula. You could stay here and venture out or pick a smaller, quieter town. When we visited the rooms were pretty much sold out in the Sturgeon Bay area, our Inn was in Bailey’s Harbor. Here is a great driving tour recommendation.

Visit an orchard.

Although we missed cherry season (late July), which I would like to go back for, it was apple season! We stopped and bought some apples and checked out this orchard, which also had a big store and fresh baked pie. Since we went apple picking last fall we opted out and purchased already picked apples. This orchard has a winery too.

Buy a pie!

This was a hot topic with KN and his sister and brother in law, who have a home in Sturgeon Bay. She insists that Sweetie Pies has the very best cherry pie. The good news is that you can buy them frozen. If you plan in advance on buying a frozen pie, bring a cooler and make this your last stop on your way out of town. We also bought a fresh apple pie that we brought home to our new neighbors!

Play on the water.

This is a great place to do anything on the water. There are boat tours (Fish Creek was recommended to us, but we didn’t have time for the sunset cruise), kayaking, fishing, sail boat and fireboat rides.  Find your boat ride here.

Most of all, make yourself unwind and sit with a glass of wine or coffee overlooking the water. It sounds so silly to say that, because who doesn’t want to do that? The problem is that it’s way harder than you think. Sitting still is not something any of us do anymore or at least without a phone or computer in our face. Door County is a quiet, relaxing place, so shift gears on your road trip in and be prepared to take it easy.
